Zhaawnookum & The Anishinaabesag
Set on Christian Island in the 1950s, this book follows Zhaawnookum, a young Ojibwe–Potawatomi boy whose ordinary childhood opens into an extraordinary journey. As he plays, works, and learns alongside his family, he is drawn into Megyaakwaa — a living forest world where the little people, Anishinaabesag, animals, water beings, ancestors, and celestial relatives continue to carry the original teachings of Creation.
Through encounters with Gnebic, protector of the waters; Mkomose and Misaabe, guardians of the forest and clan systems; Nibaagiizis, Grandmother Moon; and the ancestors who travel the Jiibaymiikana (the Milky Way, the path of souls), Zhaawnookum gathers a knowledge bundle of teachings about responsibility, balance, love, and care for all life.
When spirits from the future bring a message that has never been given before, Zhaawnookum must make a choice that will shape not only his life, but the lives of generations to come.
